Rakaposhi

Rakaposhi rises straight out of the Nagar and Hunza valleys. The height is 7,788 m; the impression from the Karakoram Highway is larger, because there is almost no foothill to hide the face. Prominence is high. It is the mountain people photograph from the road, then rarely climb.

Tilman, Secord, and others tried in the 1940s and 1950s. Mike Banks came close in 1956 and came back in 1958 with a British–Pakistani forces expedition. On 25 June he and Tom Patey reached the summit by the southwest spur, over the Monk’s Head, in a blizzard, without oxygen. Both took minor frostbite. The second ascent of the mountain waited until 1979. The 1958 ridge has been done alpine-style; other ridges exist and are serious.
